Clubs Battle Nor’Easter and Competition at Mt. Laurel Tournament; HSC Teams Dominate with Champions and Finalists
MT. LAUREL, NJ – The Columbus Day Weekend brought more than just tournament soccer to Mount Laurel this year; it delivered a grueling test of endurance. A persistent Nor’Easter swept through the area, transforming the fields into slick, wind-whipped proving grounds and providing a formidable, unscheduled opponent for every participating team. Yet, the Hamilton Soccer Club (HSC) not only competed—they flourished—securing one tournament championship and five finalist finishes.
The Mt. Laurel Columbus Weekend Tournament is a fixture on the fall calendar, drawing high-quality clubs from across the region. However, this year’s installment quickly became a survival of the fittest. Torrential downpours and sweeping winds meant that technical skills had to be matched with sheer mental and physical toughness, demanding commitment from the first whistle to the last.
The tournament organizers, in their effort to complete the robust schedule, often placed teams into punishing timetables. HSC athletes frequently found themselves facing as little as a one-hour rest period between intense, full-throttle matches. This taxing schedule tested the depth and conditioning of every roster, elevating the achievements of the weekend from simple victories to genuine displays of athletic grit and mental focus.
HSC Claims Two Championships and Five Finalist Titles
The club’s final tally for the weekend was outstanding: two outright champion and five second-place finalist trophies. This high rate of success in the face of both the weather and stiff competition speaks volumes about the quality of HSC’s preparation and coaching across its age groups.
The U8 Boys 2018 Black (Caribbean Division) earned the right to be called Tournament Champions. Competing in a high-scoring format, the U8 Boys were dominant, securing two massive victories (5-0 and 6-0) alongside a hard-fought 3-3 draw to begin their tournament run. Their spectacular group-stage performance was undeniable, securing the outright championship and signaling a very bright future for the club’s youngest competitive teams.
The U12 Boys Scorpions (Pinta Division) were models of consistency and power throughout the tournament. Navigating their bracket with precision and tactical awareness, they secured two emphatic wins in group play (6-2 and 4-0) to earn their spot in the title match. In the championship final, the Scorpions faced a tough opponent but maintained their focus through the blustery conditions, ultimately securing the victory and bringing home a well-deserved championship trophy for HSC.
Five Teams Secure Runner-Up Honors
Proving the depth and quality of the club, five HSC teams battled their way through their brackets to claim second-place Finalist honors, each team making significant strides over the weekend.
The U13 Boys Hurricanes (Santa Maria Division) showed remarkable resilience. After an early setback on Friday, they mounted a thrilling comeback campaign, securing a vital 1-0 victory on Saturday and culminating in a decisive 4-1 performance on Sunday morning, which propelled them to a second-place finish in a very tight division.
In the U12 age group, the U12 Boys Cobras (Explorer Division) were consistently competitive. They earned a valuable 2-2 draw and capped their weekend with a decisive 4-1 victory, securing a strong second-place finish in their flight.
The U10 Girls were electric all weekend. The U10 Girls Hype Red (Santa Maria Division) battled through a competitive bracket, with their strong play earning them the runner-up position. For the Hype Red, this marked a significant milestone: the first such finalist achievement in the team’s history in their inaugural season. The U10 Girls Hype Black (Caribbean Division) also battled hard and successfully secured their own second-place finish, demonstrating the strength of the girls’ program.
Finally, the U9 Boys Firestorm (Explorer Division) showed tremendous grit, securing a 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw to earn their own well-deserved runner-up placement in their competitive bracket.
Infernos Face Gauntlet, Wolfpack Excels
In perhaps the most demanding bracket of the weekend, the U11 Boys Infernos (Discovery Division) faced a true gauntlet. The team played three opponents all ranked within the top 50 in New Jersey, placing them in a flight comparable to state-level championship rounds.
Despite the near-impossible level of competition, the Infernos held their own, including two high-scoring draws (2-2 and 4-4). Their fierce effort and ability to compete against this caliber of talent was enough to secure a respectable third-place finish in one of the tournament’s toughest flights.
The U14 Boys Wolfpack (Americas Division) proved their high-level mettle by securing a decisive 6-0 victory and battling to a critical 1-1 draw against high-quality opposition, showcasing their ability to perform under the high pressure of bracket play and challenging conditions.
The Hamilton Soccer Club extends its profound gratitude to the dedicated coaches for their tireless leadership in preparing the teams for these gruelling conditions, and to the families who provided continuous, vocal support. Braving the wet and windy elements, their presence fueled the success of every athlete. The weekend at Mt. Laurel served as a powerful reminder that true success in soccer is not only measured by the scoreline, but by the character and resilience shown when facing both tough competition and the wrath of a Nor’Easter.
Go HSC!
